Do we know exactly what everyone does in the office? Michael, of course, is regional manager. Dwight, Jim, Stanley and Phyllis are the sales team. Toby is HR, Creed does Quality Assurance, and Angela, Kevin and Oscar are in accounting. Ryan is the temp, and Pam just answers the phones... and sometimes she just lets it go to voicemail.

What about Meredith? In "The Alliance," Jim wrote that she was an accountant, but she's not part of the little cluster behind Reception. And what exactly does Kelly do? I guess we'll never know about Devon, or that guy Miles, who quit to form his own company. It's not so much of an urgent question, since the threat of downsizing seems to have passed, but I was just wondering. How many more people could Dunder-Mifflin Scranton afford to lose?

Apr 23rd 2006

According to the EW feature a couple months back, both Meredith and Kelly are in customer relations.

Thanks Gupty for asking this...I was wondering myself. Since we've figured out everybody's job, thanks to PWJ , I wanted to ask about the layout of the office. Toby's and Kelly's part of the office seem to be on the other side of the break room. So are they completely cut off? What a weird layout...there seems to be more desks back there (where Toby plays Dunderball with...himself?)...

Anyway, just wondering - this thread seemed to be the spot to ask it.

I think it would be a great idea for Greg Daniels and Co. to release some kind of official fan's guide to The Office sometime over the summer (admittedly not very likely this summer, but a nice thought) that would answer questions such as this. Said guide might also help bring in a few new fans and/or make casual fans join the likes of us fanatics here on the forums!

Speak for yourself :-) Just because I have watched every episode at least 12 times, have JAM wallpaper at home and work, have an office rigtone, collect pictures of all the cast, taped every cast member talk show interview, read and write in all of the forums I can find, droll over the PSA's, does not mean I'm a fanatic.

Oh no, revelation, I AM A FANATIC!!!

I need a life !!

PWJ, maybe we can all collectively work up an office floor plan by going back to our TiVo's.

Apr 23rd 2006 edited

Thanks PWJ, I knew somebody here would have the answer.

I've doodled more Dunder-Mifflin floor plans on pieces of scrap paper than I'd like to admit, and I think I more or less know how it all fits together, but I have no scanner or anything like that. The back area has Toby, Kelly and the empty desk where Jim sits in "The Carpet" (and sometimes Marjorie can be seen lurking around back there). It's also got the room with the vending machines, made famous in the cold opening of "Booze Cruise." There's at least one more set of stairs somewhere behind the conference room -- I think that's how Packer makes his entrance in "Sexual Harrassment," and where Dwight does his pump-up dance in "Performance Review."

Tapper, I hope the preceding paragraph makes you feel a little better about your own fixation.

ps: All right, I bit the bullet and changed my name -- it seemed kind of silly to be one of the only ones without an Office-related handle.

What was your prior nym? I've thought of changing mine for the same reason but I didn't know if it would be too confusing.

I'd like to see your floor plan.

I've spent too many hours scheming in my head all of the possible JAM outcomes that we may see in the next 3 weeks. I know the show is bigger than JAM but right now I am fixated on them getting together. Wedding? No wedding? Jim's transfer? Who makes the move to break it all open? How close does Pam get to walking down the aisle? Does she ever actually get the wedding gown on? How does Roy react? So many questions, not enough answers.

Apr 23rd 2006

Whatever happens with JAM, I don't expect it to happen this week. I'm guessing that this was planned out when the order was expanded to 21 episodes from 13 and the JAM storyline was planned out for the season at that time.

I anticipate that "Drug Testing" will be one of the funniest episodes yet, with as little plot development as we've seen. I'm guessing that the game Pam and Jim play as described in the episode guide/preview won't be much of anything, although I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Until a few hours ago, I was tad gupty, which was the name of a very minor character on Daria. I joined these boards pretty early, and I didn't realize everyone would be doing an Office theme -- probably should have anticipated that.

I've got a couple of pet theories about how JAM will reach a season 2 resolution with Casino Night, but they're probably way off base. I can see Roy losing some huge amount of money and having to postpone the wedding. Or maybe Pam will be the one who makes a foolish bet, and Roy gets angry at her. Who knows, though.

Apr 23rd 2006

Interesting theory SOS. I envision casino night as being one with play money, though, with the gambling that matters being of a different sort. Jim will be proactive in that episode, I just don't have any theories how.

Okay, I succumbed to the incredible pressure!!

I changed my nym from Tapper to Up Dog.

From here on out, I am Up Dog.

PWJ, & SOS, is it me, or are there a lot of dumb posts from Up Dog in here?

What does that mean? That thing you just said.

Hey Scranton on Speed (formerly Tad Gupty), I've tried to doodle office floor plans myself. I wonder why people don't eat lunch in the room with the vending machines... There are ketchup, baloney, and tomato subs there. Oh, and I need to change my nym.

Edit: New nym is Prism Duro-Sport (Pam's i-pod device), formerly dlo.

Since we've figured out everybody's job, thanks to PWJ , I wanted to ask about the layout of the office.

It's 4:30am and I can't sleep (it's a long story...). Some people might count sheep, I drew a floor plan of the Office. Only problem is I have no way of showing everyone here... If anyone is interested, and has some web space to upload it to (it's just a small .jpg) contact me (my email is on my profile page) and I'll email it to you, then we can post a link to it here.

I'd be interested in seeing it!

You can upload to it to imageshack.us.

May 6th 2006

Thanks Patrick!

You can find it here.

It's not fancy (my MS Paint skills are not awesome!), but I think it's pretty accurate. I just don't know about the large space above the conference room. Any ideas?

If anyone has any corrections or additions, I'd be happy to change it!

May 6th 2006

Wow, lightyear, that's almost exactly what my drawings look like. Nice work.

May 6th 2006

Excellent layout lightyear. That cleared up my confusion with the breakroom in relation to the vending machine room.

Something I noticed after watching "The Alliance" last week, there is a door next to Meredith's desk, but I can't think of where it could lead to.

May 6th 2006

Yeah, you're right. I've never noticed that door before! Also that it's in a bit of a recess. Actually that whole corner of the office seems to be recessed. Weird.

May 6th 2006

Also, you can see in The Carpet when Jim looks back at the break room that...drumroll there's a BACK ENTRANCE! That explains some of our previous problems, and that area between it and the conference room could just be a closet or something and a large hallway area outside.

Here's my revised map. Still some questions though.

May 7th 2006

I like how Jim's desk is perpendicular to Dwight's instead of directly facing it. It's completely out of step with all the other desk pairings (Stanley/Phyllis, Devon/Creed, Ryan/Meredith), and you know Jim probably moved his desk at some time in the past specifically so he could look at Pam.

May 7th 2006

We know The Office is not on ground level, so for a back entrance to exist, there must be stairs. Graham has added the corridor directly below the vending machine room. I also noticed in The Carpet that there's only a narrow corridor behind the door to what I thought was the large space. So I reckon there are stairs leading up between these 2 new corridors.

So... with the new info from everyone (thanks guys!), I've drawn up this. It also includes the recessed door near accounting.

May 7th 2006

I like your theories, SOS, but I think by the way Michael talked about that desk being empty, the desk layout had been like that for a while. It's completely possible that whoever sat there when Michael first arrived moved the desk so as to not face him. Maybe?

May 7th 2006

Graham, I thought that Michael used to sit at Jim's desk, and Dwight's used to be the empty one that Packer would come in and sit at. (I'd go back and rewatch "The Carpet" to make sure, but I just watched that one a couple days ago.) Anyway, maybe it did go down like you said.

May 7th 2006

SOS, I had that exact same thought about Jim's desk and how it was completely out of sync with everyone else's. And I definitely thought he did it so that he could see Pam. But everyone else does bring up an interesting point about the Michael/Todd Packer days.

May 7th 2006

In Conflict Resolution, Creed complains about having to look at Meredith, yet his desk doesn't even face her. Why would he say that then? Did he once sit where Ryan is?

May 7th 2006

Yeah, patrick, Creed doesn't really face anyone now that Devon is gone. Maybe Devon was the redhead? He had kind of rusty-colored hair. Could be that Creed made that complaint before Halloween and then forgot to redact it, because, well. It's Creed.

Dec 8th 2006

I know this discussion started 8 months ago but I feel I NEED to ask... Has a floor plan been worked up? I can't picture, AT ALL, the back area. I have some ideas about the full layout of the office but past the kitchen, I'm lost.

Dec 9th 2006

Take a look at my post a few up-page. There's a link there to a pic I drew. The desks and vending machine room are pretty accurate, the back entranceway is probably not.

Dec 9th 2006

Mixed Berries, when you have another sleepless night, do you think you can update it with the new emplyees? Maybe we should wait a little while in case someone else gets fired. Also I guess you should make sure that Oscar is coming back. I love that you made this floorplan.
