I'm in the worst shape I've been in years. I ran a 10k two years ago and probably couldn't run a mile right now. I've got to turn this around. Dieting and exercise are hard, but not any harder than being overweight and out of shape.

I've got to turn this around. Dieting and exercise are hard, but not any harder than being overweight and out of shape.

I wish there was some real way that we could coordinate and encourage this for each other. I'm just so tired of feeling this way.

Jul 5th 2014

I am going to go for a run today. Maybe just ten minutes, but it will be a run. I'll check back later.

I have to do something. I just went on high blood pressure medication.

Jul 5th 2014

Got back from the run. I ran about a mile and a half, it wasn't much, but it was better than nothing. No body parts fell off.

Jul 5th 2014

I have always been "athletic", and I think I use that as a crutch to not work out for the past 20 years. Meanwhile, a fat guy I went to high school with, whose whole family is obese and has died early from diabetes, he is actually doing something. I see on Facebook he is riding his bike and getting in shape. Meanwhile me, the "athletic" one, is not. From the outside I "look" like I'm in a lot better shape than he is, yet my interior numbers (cholesterol, blood pressure) are creeping up.

So today I ran a mile. While that was somewhat of a victory, the real victory will be if I can do something, several times a week, for several months.

Another motivation for me, besides my health, is my daughter (and my wife). My daughter is out of shape and overweight...not terribly so, but enough that I want to be a better influence on her. Today she went with me, and while she only ran a little bit, she was excited that I was, and high fived me on every lap and gave me encouragement. Watching me be healthy will make her want to be healthy.

I walked my dog 3.5 miles early this morning. I could always walk a distance, so it was good to see I still can. Running takes repetition, and exercise has to be a near-daily thing. Running 1.5 miles is awesome. Keep it up. You know from experience that soon running 3 miles at a faster pace will be even easier than today's run. I'll get back to it too, but for now I've got plantar fasciitis that I need to let heal. By the way, I drove past a jogger earlier today. She was overweight, probably on a par with me. I thought, it must have taken some courage and motivation to get out there and run like that. I decided she was kicking ass at life right then. You want to be in shape for those around you, but mostly you owe it to yourself.

Jul 5th 2014

Oh, and I really want to run a 5k with my son this fall. That's my goal. His too. I should let him know.

Jul 5th 2014

I'm going biking tomorrow. Shaved my legs and everything.

(Uh, just the legs.)

(Uh, you know what I mean.)

Jul 5th 2014

Who knew a bike ride took that much preparation?

Jul 6th 2014

I wanted to wear shorts. :-)

Good thing no one comes here anymore, so I don't have to worry about anyone seeing this. I've worked for the same company for 14+ years and, for the second time in five years, I'm reapplying for my job in what's understood to be a glorified layoff. If I make it, it'll have to be double-digit rounds of layoffs that I'd have survived. Hell, 14 years in newspapers is like 50 years in a lot of fields. I guess I hope I make it, but right now I only feel strongly that I don't want to go through this process again.

Nov 4th 2014

Newspapers should have more headlines like this:

"President Obama signs new legislation. He never expected John Boehner to react like THIS."

or...

"Turn to page 4 to find out which 80's rock band ISIS is the most like"

or...

"You'll never guess which two Supreme Court Justices almost came to blows over Illegal Immigration. Turn to Page 2 to find out."

You know...you need to stay up with the times.

Nov 4th 2014

This guy thought he was writing parody headlines. Then he found out it was all too real. You'll never guess what happened next, and it could change your life.

Nov 4th 2014

This newspaper employee discovered his job was on the line. What he does next will melt your heart.

Actually, sorry to hear about the turmoil Bri. I am also looking at another possible job change and maybe another move, so I feel your pain.

Nov 7th 2014

That is the suckitude. Can you just get some magical easy cheap credential and start teaching journalism at a community college somewhere?

Nov 20th 2014 edited

I dropped out of a FB chat with some of you because it was on a work computer. We're reorganizing. Our current jobs are gone, and we each must apply for up to two new ones. No one is guaranteed to get "hired." I interviewed for one today, and the next is tomorrow morning. I hate interviewing.

Nov 20th 2014

Huh? I thought you were an exotic dancer. Does this mean now you might have to strip, topsies & bottoms? Work the pole?

Nov 20th 2014

God, Bri, how much more are they gonna put you guys through? Damn Good luck on the interview tomorrow. The one today most likely went better than you think it did. We're always our own worst critics. Please keep us posted.

Nov 20th 2014

I should NOT have sent that porn to your work email.

Nov 20th 2014

Thank, MISS. It's kind of comical at this point, but I've had my chances to move on. I should be more nervous about it all, but I have a decent amount of confidence that I'll land on my feet one way or another. Unless they find my Jinx porn.

Nov 21st 2014

I have a decent amount of confidence

I don't think this is unfounded. I mean, you've made it through, like, a thousand rounds of layoffs.

Nov 21st 2014

Unless they find my Jinx porn

It was of Toosie's Mom, so doubly offensive.

Nov 22nd 2014

Our current jobs are gone, and we each must apply for up to two new ones.

Are the two news even remotely related to the old one?

One minor flaw of this forum is its search function, which is a shame because I'd like to see how many times I've posted the following:

Today I survived a round of layoffs while talented, hardworking friends did not.

Are the two news even remotely related to the old one?

I still don't know the answer to this question.

It's not a great search feature, but if you have time...

Dec 2nd 2014

Oh my. I don't know if I love or hate that. I like that you did it, though. Wow, nothing ever changes, huh?

Dec 3rd 2014

2012 seemed smooth? :-) Maybe '15 will be, too? And I noticed that a long time ago, like in '08, you had furloughs, which... I don't know what that means exactly... I know Civil War soldiers liked them. Anyway, that seems to have stopped, which is probably good.

Dec 3rd 2014

Unless they hired everyone back after each of those rounds, I don't know how they still have people to lay off. Maybe you're the last one left? That would be sweet.

furloughs, which... I don't know what that means exactly... I know Civil War soldiers liked them

Yeah, what's your beef? I also don't know why you feel sorry for others who have gotten laid. Off.

Dec 3rd 2014

Maybe you're the last one left?

My friend, who left in '02, made a similar crack today. Close to it.

Dec 3rd 2014

How terrible. I'm sorry you have to go through all of that bull@&it, Bri.
