The Subway where I reluctantly had lunch had R.E.M. on the sound system, multiple songs. It made my day :-)

I still can't believe there was a band called The Small Feces.

I still can't believe there was a band called The Small Feces.

When Rod Stewart took over on vocals, they had to change the band name to Steaming Pile of Turd Blossoms.

Apparently this place can still crack me up.

Jul 17th 2014

I appreciated that, but I never heard the original.

From the clips I've heard, it's identical.

No, Weird Al is really an intense guy when it comes to his music. My brother had a special VHS concert when we were kids, and there was a behind the scenes thing that showed him in the studio, not being fun or goofy at all. :-)

The other night, we were talking about how strange it was that he made a grammar parody of a song about date-rape, then started talking about if there was a date-rape parody of Conjunction Junction. I wonder which would be better/worse...

Jul 21st 2014

Oh my god, I thought that Pharrell song was about being happy. I had no idea it was about date-rape

John Farrell, the manager of the Red Sox? He got raped?

I bought a Van Morrison best-of CD over the weekend, and while it's got some great songs on it ("Domino," "Moondance," and some cuts he did with the band Them), there are also some awful, awful songs on there, real AOR (adult-oriented radio) garbage. I think it would be fair to say ole Van might have tailed off in quality sometime in the mid-Seventies, but the upswing is that I'd love to find more of his work with Them because the three tracks on the album are pretty sweet (also another point against the best-of's favor: they have the radio-edit version of "Brown-Eyed Girl," the one without the line about "making love in the green grass")

I bought an Alex Chilton two-disc collection recently (Top 30), it's hit or miss but the hits are amazing. I recently read the excellent biography of him by Holly George-Warren, so I was interested in seeking out his solo work (I had the first two Big Star albums on one CD). "Paradise" is one of the most fun songs I've ever heard in my life.

I have been struck, quite suddenly and without my proper consent, with a rare case of insomnia tonight. I have perused the normal channels of internet-based entertainment (not those, you pervs) and of course, it wasn't long before I ended up here. Here's some songs I've been listening to/had on my mind lately.

Brill Bruisers The title track from the latest New Pornographers album. Both LATP! and I both like this album quite a bit.

Leave Someone The newest single from the Toronto-based band with the uber-Canadian name of "The Wilderness of Manitoba". This song and this album is a departure from the bands earlier Fleet Foxes-esque sound, for a more modern, rock influenced one, and I'm not sure yet if I like it as much as I like their trippy earlier stuff. Some of you might remember I put a song on my last CD I sent out from these guys. Some of you might not.

Jubilee I take any opportunity I can to share the music of The Deep Dark Woods. This cut is from the album they released this past spring. It's not my favourite album (See The Winter Hours) but it's got a few nice cuts, and this one is my favourite. The video is from one of their visits to KEXP, but I actually like the studio version better, which isn't on YouTube, so if you care enough you can check it out there.

That's all for now, you hosers. Take care.

Add me to that list of album likers!

I've been digging Violent Shiver by Benjamin Booker.

I added these to my Watch Later, b/c I'm insanely lazy. I don't even type out "because."

hosers

This reminds me of the new guy I heard in the past couple of weeks, Hozier.

Been on a Talking Heads kick lately (I'm thinking of doing a paper for one of my classes on The Fortress of Solitude by Lethem, which puts me in the mindset of listening to the Heads because they crop up a lot in his fiction/non-fiction). "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" is sheer perfection

Mar 17th 2015

Robert Durst should sue over that slander.

Mar 18th 2015

He did it all for the nookie.

Mar 19th 2015

DC knows about this band, but I doubt he cares much. Anyway, DC, did you see Bombadil's down to two guys now?

Mar 19th 2015

The last name Durst will soon fade to extinction, much like the name Hitler is extinct today.

That's too bad, but what really makes me sad is reading Cat's Cradle. I love that place.

Yeah, and like nobody names their kids Stalin anymore.

May 15th 2015

Brian, I saw your post on facebook about going to see BB King in the 90s. I would like to ask if that's the show you wore sweatpants to. But I won't.

May 15th 2015

I mean, on facebook. I'll do it here. :-)

May 17th 2015

Nope. That was a John Mayer concert at West Point. I respect West Point, hence the grey sweat pants. I dressed up for B.B.

May 17th 2015

Oh, John Mayer. Yes. I forgot you loved him. :-)

May 17th 2015

Who doesn't, really?
