I was diagnosed with RA three years ago...so far, I'm on a low level medication and it's handling it fine. So I know all about auto-immune diseases. My RA doctor says that someday all illnesses will be treated by an autoimmune specialist...even heart disease...because your body's incorrect response to things is the cause of a great many illnesses.

Bronchitis is bacteria-based, too, right? So the anti-biotics helped?

Had to look it up...usually viral, but can be bacterial. Who knows what I have...but it's almost better now. For a while, I was coughing so much that it would make me almost pass out, and I had headaches and sore muscles in my abdomen from so much coughing.

Wow, I feel for you guys. I have a sister with MS and another with lupus. I was misdiagnosed with RA in 2013, but it turned out all I needed to do was stop taking my daily asthma inhaler to eliminate the symptoms. The asthma sucks - and is an autoimmune-type thing of its own - but it is still an improvement. I sincerely hope everyone feels better. Life's easier when you don't have shit wrong with you.

I'm sorry, what does this have to do with my medical issues? It's not all about you, Bri. Let's try to focus here on Jinx and what is wrong with him.

Jeesh. Bri is pretty full of himself, amiright?

Jan 19th 2016

As we all should be, amiright?

I was diagnosed with RA three years ago..

Oh, I'm so sorry, Jinx.

your body's incorrect response to things is the cause of a great many illnesses.

It's so weird to think about how this whole thing is because your body is attacking itself.

but it's almost better now.

I'm glad to hear that. We live in a basement apartment underneath our landlord who is in her 70s and for the past couple of Winters she's come down with a terrible case of bronchitis and it seems to last forever. It makes her so weak. A coughing episode can take upwards of 10 minutes once it gets started and she has such trouble breathing through them.

They put her on Prednisone and she's feeling much better after this latest episode, but it's been a month.

The asthma sucks - and is an autoimmune-type thing of its own - but it is still an improvement.

I didn't realize that. The lungs overreact to foreign particles? (Goes off to Google-land) In any case, any disease is a bummer. Regardless of severity they all change our lives in some way.

I sincerely hope everyone feels better. Life's easier when you don't have shit wrong with you.

Thanks, Bri. Yes, it is.

Doc says I've probably got an active flare-up but they won't know until after they do a colonoscopy, which has to happen after I have a chance to heal. I start Prednisone today, which should help heal up the cell walls and knock back my immune system for a while.

Unfortunately, my last semester of school begins on Monday and I'm not sure how my system is going to respond to this. I'm really considering asking for a semester of medical leave. (Ugh.) I'm only 37. What's one more semester, right?

Jan 21st 2016

Prednisone is a miracle drug. You might feel better than you expect. I hope you do, anyway.

I didn't realize that. The lungs overreact to foreign particles?

Allergic asthma, which I have, is autoimmune. Of course, it's not just allergens. Cold air or a short sprint can trigger an attack. Mine is probably a 4 on a 1-10 scale compared to what some people endure. It can be deadly. It hasn't been that serious for me since I was 3 or 4. And rescue inhalers are awesome.

Not just illnesses. ALL ALLERGIES is this exact thing happening, your body perceiving something as a threat when it isn't at all.

I read that and my heart sunk for your parents. I just can't imagine the desperation of trying to help your little guy breathe.

or a short sprint can trigger an attack.

Don't you run? Have you ever had issues with that when you were running?

You might feel better than you expect.

Today is my second day on the steroids. I have a LOT more energy, which is nice. You can definitely see it in my house. But last night I got terrible muscle cramps all over my body. Apparently it can cause your muscles to atrophy. So today I'm going to take my totally sedentary ass out for a walk. And maybe crack open this Pilates book someone gave me a few Christmases ago.

So today I'm going to take my totally sedentary ass out for a walk.

Bundle up! It's wintertime!

Jan 22nd 2016

Oooh! I did. And I walked two miles! It only felt like 15 minutes. I was berating myself as I made it back to my drive-way, but I could feel that good healthy blood-pumping feeling so I just decided to go back in. 2 miles in 40 minutes! On a hill, no-less. That felt really good.

I kind of like walking outside in the winter. The snow is more than silent. It absorbs the auditory mess. It's like walking in a crisp sound studio.

Jan 22nd 2016

I saw Sedentery Ass when they opened for Kiss at the L.A. Coliseum in '72. Alice Cooper sat in on triangle, if I recall.

Rescue inhalers (steroids) are a great pre-exercise preventative. And exercise expands the lungs, which is great for asthma. So, paradox.

My sister's been on prednisone for 30 years. I know the side effects can be hell. Sorry. Sounds like you're coping like a champ. Can't be easy.

Jan 22nd 2016

I kind of like walking outside in the winter.

I'm not much for the cold, but this can be nice.

Jan 22nd 2016

prednisone

I've taken this a couple of times, for various reasons. It can alter a lot of things. I won't go into it, but... a lot of things.

I like being outside in the winter, in the snowy cold, when I'm wearing my snow boots and am very bundled up. I love being warm with cold air on my face. Wintertime is ideal for that. :-)

I don't have many occasions to wear my snow boots. I will tomorrow, though. ;-)

They're a little difficult to wear - I don't know how you northern friends do it, really. They're ideal for walking in the snow, but not for wearing to town, to work. I only really wear them for maybe an hour each year. If that.

Jan 22nd 2016 edited

I own a pair of Timberland hikers. I only wear them when I'm shoveling or plowing (snow). Every 6 or 7 years I replace them. They're not real comfy. But they're warm and dry.

I only wear my winter boots when I'm going to be spending much time outside, or playing in the snow. I will wear them to work if we get a big snowstorm, but then I bring shoes to change into.

We went ice skating yesterday, and the pair I have don't really fit me that well. I've got a sore spot on my ankle today from the skate rubbing on it.

But they're warm and dry.

These are the most important qualifications for snow boots. Nothing like coming back inside with wet, cold feet. Blech.

Also, this:

I love being warm with cold air on my face

Yep.

My sister's been on prednisone for 30 years.

Woah, Bri! That's a long time. Is it for asthma-related issues?
