I know someone who went to Israel when she was about your age and it was through some outfit that set up trips over there to help expose more young people to the Jewish faith.

A lot of my friends went on these, though I didn't. They're called . . . birthright tours? I don't remember. It depends on how old you are and who you go with. I know a bunch of people who came back spouting a bunch of pro-Israeli politics, which was . . . well, it wasn't my favorite. Not just pro-Israeli, we're talking hardcore, pro-settlement, reactionary garbage. I think, in theory, I might still be eligible, at least for the next two months, but generally they're for younger people.

For most of the people I knew, though, it was just a cheap trip to a part of the world they wouldn't otherwise get to.

Someone from the back pages of NA has to come back now to fill in for e* while she's away. MLD, I'm looking at you. Or you, BTF. Or you Lori.

The program is indeed called Birthright, and it is an organization that sends young Jewish adults (ages 18-26...sorry DftF) on free 10-day tours of Israel. It is meant to ignite Jewish/Iaraeli pride, but a lot of people go to take advantage of the free-ness. I've been there before, so I doubt it will change my views, but I am looking forward to enjoying the country and connecting with other Jews my age.

It's where your people get trained on how to run the world covertly, right?

Feb 13th 2011

Oh, that starts a lot younger than that.

Jinx, she's going to Israel, not Utah.

Feb 14th 2011

There is nothing covert about the Mormon's plans to rule the world.

Feb 14th 2011

I was considering going with a muslim country like Iran, but Utah had more impact.

Feb 14th 2011

Utah had more impact.

You don't hear that phrase often.

Feb 14th 2011

Not since Stockton and Malone retired. And even then, not so much.

Feb 14th 2011

Utah just got pwned by North Carolina. Speaking of things that don't happen that often!

Feb 14th 2011

It's weird to me that they're both states, and in the same country.

Feb 14th 2011

Utah is also in Belgium? I did not know that.

Feb 14th 2011

I'm so confused.

Feb 14th 2011

I'm pretty sure they're still staring at my junk.

You know, LATP, I bet everyone at NA wishes that they lived in Utah on the weekend....

I miss Jerry.

Feb 15th 2011

Why did they fire him?

Feb 15th 2011

I think he quit on his own.

Feb 15th 2011

He did.

Feb 15th 2011

After Deron Williams yelled at him.

Feb 15th 2011

Who's Jerry?

Feb 15th 2011

Sloan.

Feb 15th 2011

Oh, you mean Jerry "Playoff Choke Specialist" Sloan?

Mar 3rd 2011

Happy Birthday to you, bubblewrap cast! Hope you have a great day today!

What's funny about this thread is that it used to be about nostalgia and growing up, whereas the birthday thread was used for birthday wishes. But the birthday thread has become so ignored, that the last time it was used was when Karen was "First!-ing" all the threads after the NA-mergency.

I now need to regularly schedule times to trim my ear hairs and eyebrow hairs, or else I get random hairs sticking out. How's that for getting old.

Happy Birthday to you, Alexander Graham Bell, Charles Ponzi (inventor of the Madoff Scheme), and Bud Bundy.

Mar 3rd 2011

I refuse to take the blame for this manufactured problem. And you've all spoiled BWC's birthday wishes by forcing me to muddy them up with indignation.

Mar 3rd 2011

Happy birthday!
