Discuss all things Phyllis.

Mar 6th 2006

I feel so bad for Phyllis, sometimes. She really gets a lot of mean-spirited comments thrown her way. Some examples:

*When she volunteered to be a cheerleader in Basketball and Michael says, "Oh, yuck. That's worse than you playing."

*When she went to the trouble of knitting Michael an oven mitt in Christmas Party, and he blatantly shows his disgust for it and tries to pawn it off during 'yankee swap'.

*When Michael says that she is like a grandmother around the office and she is the same age as he is.

*When she received the "bushiest beaver" award in The Dundies.

*When she suggests "green" as the color of streamers to use for Meredith's birthday party and Angela says that green is whorish. Phyllis is wearing a green sweater.

The expressions on her face just kill me. She seems genuinely hurt and I just want to give her a hug. Great acting!

I love Phyllis. Michael is a complete jerk to her, more than to of the other employees, in my opinion. The Christmas Party scene just about broke my heart. I can't imagine anyone sticking around for long after being treated like that. I like that she has her little side that you feel bad for when Michael is rude, but she also is a little mischevious, like when she was talking with the girls about what Pam wrote on the bathroom wall. I think it is wonderful that the writers gave her Bob Vance. That way we know she will be taken care of after Angela critizes her spreadsheets.

Mar 6th 2006

Just thinking off the top of my head here, but stella brings up an interesting point regarding Bob Vance. There has been constant talk of whether or not Pam is the only thing keeping Jim at Dunder-Mifflin Scranton.

With the way everyone (well, Michael and Angela) treats Phyllis, could Bob be what is keeping her at D-M?

From 2-02 Sexual Harrasment
Toby: If you already have a relationship you should disclose it to HR.
Phyllis: All relationships, even a one night stand?
(nice look from Jim)
Now Michael jumps in with "I think the old honor system was fine"

Did everyone assume this meant Michael and Phyllis hooked up- and not give it a second thought? Would be yet another reason to feel sorry for Phyllis.

Yikes! I would hope that Phyllis would have higher standards. I don't even want to think about it any more than that.

Just caught Phyllis circling "Mood Swings" on Dwight's health form in "Health Care". Someone else has probably noticed this, but I thought it was interesting to see this part of her character reflected in a little detail.

It's great when Phyllis perks up a bit. Don't forget her great win in Flonkerton during the Office Olympics. Plus this great exchange during the game of HORSE:

Jim: Ok, very nicely done. I think that's H-O-R for Stanley, and H-O for Phyllis.

Phyllis: Are you calling me a ho?

Jim: Oh my God. Phyllis coming alive! I like it.

As bad as Michael is to Phyllis, I can't help but laugh at some of his classic moments dissing her. Maybe I'm just pure evil, but the "boner" line and the "life moves a little slower here in Scranton" montage of Phyllis walking back to her desk strike the right balance of comedy and darkness.

Mar 24th 2006

You know what, I felt bad for the real Phyllia, after all the cracks that have been made at her expense over the course of the show. Perhaps, as a girl, I am a little bit more sensitive when it comes to actresses who have to take the brunt of writer's jokes about their characters (see Traci Gold on "Growing Pains" who ended up with an eating disorder because of it) but watching the Season 1 DVD commentary makes me feel better.

In "Basketball Game" John, BJ and the rest say that Phyllis has no problems with the jokes made at her character's expense and she understands that it is just about the writing and the show. I love the fact that it is John who is the first one to pipe up about this and to assure us fans that no one is meaning any ill will to the real Phyllis and that she is totally cool with the jokes. Plus, I love the fact that they all think that she is the most amazing actress and they were so excited when they found out that she would be an actual memeber of the cast.

My favourite Phyllis line to date is from "The Alliance" when Angela points out that it was Phyllis' idea to get red streamers: "Oh boy...you..."

Anyone who has worked with someone who likes to "pass the buck" when anything goes wrong knows Phyllis' pain.

Phyllis rocks.

Watching Office Olympics last night brought it home to me. She is constantly putting it out there. Need a player for the basketball game? "I'll do it, if it's just for fun. I played in school." That offer rejected, a cheerleader is needed: "I'll do it." Office Olympics: who volunteers to compete against Kevin in Flonkerton? "I will." And she kicks ass. I'm sure there are more examples of Phyllis' can-do attitude. And there's a rumor she "did" (did I say that?) someone in the office ("Do one-night stands count?" Whaaaaat?) And these days she's got herself a good man who showers her with gifts on V-day. Go Phyllis.

Jun 23rd 2006

After watching Booze Cruise last night, did everyone notice Phyllis slow dancing with Creed? I guess this was pre Bob Vance. Also, Creed can dance! Not something I would picture Creed doing. Also, I love the line delivery when Phyllis mentions how everyone drowned shoveling coal on the Titanic. I love how it just pushes Michael over the edge!

Jun 23rd 2006

Yes! That freaked me out when I saw that!

Wonder if Phyllis couldn't stand Creed's stench of death either (thus no office romance). Maybe Creed was her one-night stand...shudder

Jun 23rd 2006

Maybe Creed was her one-night stand...shudder

Thanks so much for that mental picture, THPJ...

Jun 23rd 2006

Hey Stella, I think that Toby gets worse treatment than Phyllis from Michael. Michael is somewhat aggressively mean towards Toby, while to Phyllis it's mostly Michael just acting without thinking. Not to say he isn't being mean to Phyllis, but he just doesn't realize it most of the time.

Jun 24th 2006

I love Phyllis! Isn't this her first acting job? I can't remember the exact details of the story but I think she was working in casting and someone had her sit in for a couple scenes as a background character and she developed into a regular.

I also noticed her dancing with Creed in Booze Cruise and thought about the one-night stand.

One of my favorite exchanges is in Conflict Resolution when she tells Angela "I don't like you".

I've developed a theory that Phyllis will play a big role in Jim & Pam eventually getting together. I think her believing Pam & Jim were the secret romance in E-mail Survelliance had some foreshadowing and her "Oh dear" comment in Conflict Resolution has always stuck with me for some reason. Don't know exactly how it would happen, but it would be great for her to be a hero after being crapped on for most of the show.

Jun 24th 2006

Nobody ever mentions it, but don't you guys notice the way Phyllis always tilts her ear to listen in to things that others are talking about? There are so many times that I notice her doing this. She seems passively snoopy.

In Email Survellience we find out that she was already on to Jim & Pam, probably because she pays so close attention to everything going on.

Jun 24th 2006

I love how Phyllis sticks her tongue out when Michael mentions Bob Vance would be providing a refrigerator as the Casino Night Prize.

Jun 24th 2006

Definitely Plaid. Also, remember in Boys and Girls she has a talking head where she mentions how much she likes girl talk. I still like her though.

Dec 15th 2006

Good episode for Phyllis last night - I had no idea how much mind control Angela could wield. She calls her a whore (in orange) and yet Phyllis still loyally attends the party...hmm

Dec 15th 2006

From 2-02 Sexual Harrasment Toby: If you already have a relationship you should disclose it to HR. Phyllis: All relationships, even a one night stand? (nice look from Jim) Now Michael jumps in with "I think the old honor system was fine"

Did everyone assume this meant Michael and Phyllis hooked up- and not give it a second thought? Would be yet another reason to feel sorry for Phyllis.

All this one-night-stand talk is old, but Phyllis here was making a joke at Michael's expense about Jan, She's not worried for herself.

Dec 15th 2006

I don't think Phyllis was making fun of Michael and Jan because they didn't hook up until "The Client", which was later on in the season.

Feb 9th 2007

Congratulations, Phyllis! So is she Mrs. "Vance Refrigeration" ?

I love Phyllis, I think she's so cute and sweet and I like it when an episode is devoted to one of the supporting characters. When she does stuff like dropping that line about Pam on Karen during Travelling Salesman or "stealing" Pam's wedding ideas, for me it's hard to believe she's doing it on purpose. I don't think she's dumb or malicious, that she just doesn't see how that might make someone feel.

Then again, she could just be very crafty...likes to play poker just for fun, eh?...riiiight.

I don't know, my point is I don't think there's a mean bone in her body.

Mar 29th 2007

OK... If Phyllis is in sales and makes sales calls, how come in the Sexual Harassment episode (which I just saw) she tells Michael she reports to HR and not to him?

Mar 29th 2007

When does she say that?

Mar 29th 2007

When does she say that?

I think she's referring to the end when Phyllis tells Michael, "You don't have to worry, I'm not going to any, to HR." That doesn't mean that she reports to HR. She could report an incident that is an issue to be filed with HR.

Mar 30th 2007 edited

I was struck by how different she looked in the S1 episodes, more than any other character I thought. I think it was the hairstyle.

Mar 30th 2007

Yes! I thought so too. I think her hair looked greyer, maybe?

Mar 30th 2007

That was before they decided to unleash her big personality.

Mar 30th 2007

I guess I thought she said "I report to HR" instead of "not going to HR." Curse my feeble auditory processing skills!

(For the record, I heard "paralzyed" immediately on Lost the other night, not "Paolo lies" or whatever else they thought she said.)
