All right, this idea was just born, and it may not pan out, but there has been some discussion of NA'ers putting together an audio commentary for an epsiode or two of this television show called The Office. Ever heard of it?

Anyway, I know it's possible, because other people have done it. I'm no kind of technical genius or anything, so someone who has a bigger brain than I is going to have to deal with that bit. But take this thread as an opportunity to discuss:

  1. Your burning desire to participate.

  2. Which episode(s) you think are worthy.

  3. Suggestions on how to make this technically feasible.

  4. How freaking smart and awesome I am. (Just kidding. Well, sorta.)

I suspect that more than a few people might be interested in this, and if that's the case, we might need to do more than one episode, to avoid over-crowding. There's nothing worse than fifteen people trying to talk and nobody listening. I would suggest we set a cap of three commenters per episode, and find some kind of random way of choosing who gets to talk on which episode. Like, I'm sure everybody is going to want to do "Booze Cruise", or "Casino Night", or "The Job". But some people are going to have to suck it up and do "E-Mail Surveillance", or something. That's just the way it crumbles, cookie-wise.

DwightfromtheFuture is freaking smart and awesome.

Jun 22nd 2007

Well, we rock at group fanfic and summer contests, so this only makes sense.

You know what would be cool? If some supercool fansite operator was to post the mp3's of these commentaries when we're done. That might be the best way to ensure folks in high places (Jenna Fischer's second cousin, Kate Flannery's butler) hear them.

I'm in!!

Are we only going to do Season 2 or 1 since those are the only ones out? Or can we do Andy episodes! Cuz I'd love the one where he hits on Pam. And the one where he punches the wall.

eta: DftF is the awesomest of all awesomes.

eata:...and The Injury. And Diversity Day. And...well, you can pretty much put me down for any of them because while the shades may differ, they are all colored with awesomeness.

Jun 22nd 2007 edited

Well, since Season 3 is available for iTunes, and we'd just be making MP3s, we could probably do any episode out there.

Jun 22nd 2007

This is a very neat idae, but, more to the point, what's wrong with "E-Mail Surveillance"? I love that epsiode, dang it.

Jun 22nd 2007

On the subject of technical expertise, my hubby did this type of thing for awhile so I'll do some research tonight with him. Also, I'm friends with the dude who owns a recording studio across the street. He likes The Office. Maybe he can help.

Jun 22nd 2007

Ooh, I like Email Surveillance. I can do one of the "other" episodes.

What, you want I should change it to "Phyllis' Wedding", the Most Hated Episode of All-Time? I figured that was a little outlandish.

Anyway, if we could organize this a little, it would be great. I think the first thing we need to do is get a grip on how many participants we have. Then we'll know how many episodes we need. Once we know that, we can go about picking episodes. Or something.

If you're in -- how about a quick post, and a top three episodes you'd want to see done?

I'm in.

  1. "Conflict Resolution"
  2. "Booze Cruise"
  3. "The Job"

ETA: Maybe Women's Appreciation as well, since I saw some of the filming at the mall.

I don't get it. We'd each do one? By ourselves? Or are we talking some group recording? I am assuming these would be turned into downloadable podcasts somewhere.

Jun 22nd 2007

Or are we talking some group recording?

It's more like this, I think, and then we'd turn them into podcasts. If someone was really motivated, and did a commentary all by themselves for an episode nobody else had any interest in, that'd be all right, too.

Jun 22nd 2007

Yep...I'm already coming up with some viable options. It's got a term. It's called double-ending.

Looks like we could each stay on the phone but record our own tracks then send them to a decided upon editor. We'd have to make sound marks at the beginning of the episode and turn down the volume on the actual Office Clip but it could work that way.

I'm trying to find Skype options to do this as that would be much better.

Maybe, if push comes to shove, those of us who are regionally close together could get together to do some.

Jun 22nd 2007

Another option is recording commentary, by yourself, for all the episodes that you are interested in and we could cut them together.

Problem with that is you lose the energy that a regular group commentary has feeding off of each other. I think that's part of the marvel of the dynamic of NA'ers.

Jun 22nd 2007

Yeah, I think the fun would be in interracting with everyone else and talk about your favorite parts.

Jun 22nd 2007

I'm in, although it might turn out like Chris Farley's old SNL skits - "Um, yeah, this is a good part, remember this, this is awesome, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!"

Please add me to the list. I may just end up screaming out my love for Jenna over and over but the payoff will be my muffled wails after you put the gag on me.

Jun 22nd 2007 edited

I'm a little foggy on the technical details. How would we submit an audio commentary? Would be need iTunes to do this? How would we record it?

Well either way, I'll pick three episodes just in case there is a way I will be able to do it.

Take Your Daughter To Work Day
Drug Testing
The Convict

Even if it's just me by myself.

(edit: Eff you, Markdown)

Jun 22nd 2007

Those techincal details are as yet to be ironed out, but we're hoping to do it in the way that people who live in different cities do podcasts, so it sounds (sorta) as if we're all in the same room. It would take some coordination, but we're all grown-ups with nothing better to do, right?

Jun 22nd 2007

The way I understand the dudes at the That's What She Said podcast do it is they both have Skype. One of them also has the recording software. So he calls his friend in another city over Skype, then hits record and they just chat. Later he mixes in sound effects and clips and edits out parts he doesn't like or whatever. I know the Office Alliance podcasters do virtually the same thing and there's three of them, and sometimes there's a fourth. I'd assume all involved would have to be watching the episode, cued to start simultaneously and with the volume set pretty low. Then just chat while one person records the conversation.

That's how I envision it. Maybe it's not that simple. I did e-mail the OA girls for advice.

Jun 22nd 2007

It certainly ought to be that simple, even if it's not. If it wasn't, and I were the type of person who could program computers, I would totally write a dedicated podcasting program.

Jun 22nd 2007

The OA girls? I'm trying to figure this out and I'm just coming up with Overeaters Anonymous.

Jun 22nd 2007

Sorry. The Office Alliance podcast.
