I remembered the guitar in Jim's room in E-Mail Surveillance. Pam didn't?

Well, Pam hasn't watched Email Surveillance a thousand times like I have, so I'm willing to let her off on this one.

I was thinking that, too, and it really annoyed me. And then I realized that, even after almost 11 years of marriage, there are probably things that my husband doesn't know about me. And I don't even mean about my secret life as an international spy. I mean more mundane things, like that I played clarinet in middle school or that I had a dog named Lucky (three different dogs named Lucky, actually. None of whom were all that lucky, apparently, since they all either disappeared to "farms" or were hit by cars). There's probably even more stuff that he knew at one time and just doesn't even remember. So maybe the guitar is just one of those things we realized because we scrutinized Jim's room during that episode (and continue to scrutinize their relationship). They've only been together a few months.

Oct 25th 2007

At least you didn't bust it while dancing. That would be even more of a bummer.

Who's to say I didn't? Kidding. Ew. Yeah, I guess I had that one coming.

Oct 25th 2007

The guitar thing didn't bother me in the least. Email Surveillance was two years ago, she wasn't in his room that long, and she was pretty focused on his yearbook. He moved twice so it could have disappeared in one of the moves, or maybe it's at his parents' house. Maybe he's really bad, or once was good but stopped playing, and either way he's embarrassed to tell Pam about it. Or maybe he's simply one of those people who doesn't tell others everything about himself, even a girlfriend. I'm a lot like that so I can relate.

Didn't someone write a chapter about Pam asking about his guitar, and then he wrote a song and played it for his mom in our fanfic?

Oct 25th 2007

I could see her forgetting the guitar, but it seemed like such an obvious call-back that her comment didn't seem to make sense because I was thinking about her on his bed right next to the guitar as she said it. I've known a lot of guys who owned guitars because they wanted to play or they thought it looked cool to own one.

I'm a little annoyed they don't incorporate more of our fanfic into the canon of the show.

Oct 25th 2007

I think the best part of this ep. was the end of the commercial...

limitless paper for a paperless world.

that's just...wow.

back tomorrow after rewatching seven billion times.

Yes, that is insulting. Why didn't they just have Dwight look in the camera and flip you off while holding a sign that said, "This means you, NA"? Would have been more subtle than their complete snub.

Oct 25th 2007

I am wasting so much time here tonight. I really do have other things to do, too. What's wrong with me?

Well, there is that possible writer's strike coming up...

This episode seemed way too short for me. I must be a mean person because I thought the Phyllis crying scene was so funny. I also thought it was funny that my husband turned to me and said "Why does Stanley have to be the convict picking up trash? What's up with that?"

I'm waiting for Scrubs to be over so I can re-watch The Office. Oh and Yay! My plane did get delayed but I literally got home at 7:56pm...just in time for The Office with one minute to spare since it started at 7:58pm here.

I don't fault her for not noticing. It just struck me as odd that the writers - who have employed callbacks numerous times this season - used the guitar as a device this time around. And yes, I've watched Email Surveillance too many times.

yeah, i remember lots of mouth-dropped-open moments...not many laugh out loud ones...

Oct 25th 2007 edited

One of my favorite moments was Michael calling Ryan's boss and telling him "Ryan is acting like a little bitch again."

eta: Also, I am very proud of myself for not watching the DM ad before the episode tonight. Of course this has nothing to do with my will power but more to do with the fact that I didn't have internet access for most of the day.

Oct 25th 2007

In addition to the goings-on between Jim & Pam regarding jobs and dreams, Pam was pretty perturbed by Michael's "Even the receptionist is getting in on the creativity" line. Signs are pointing towards a "Pam has a chance to break out of her professional rut" plot line, I hope the writers follow through with it.

Oct 25th 2007

I can't imagine her not being the receptionist. Then again, Ryan's not the temp, Jan's unemployed and Jim transferred to another state for half a season. Anything's possible.

Oct 25th 2007

I can't imagine her not being the receptionist.

Me either.

That's something I really wonder about if the show lasts much longer. How do you keep everyone in Scranton and yet have them grow professionally? Maybe you don't have them grow. But that would be a bit depressing. I don't know, hope Daniels & Co. have good ideas brewing.

Oct 25th 2007

I'm fairly certain the guitar thing is another example of fans keeping track of continuity more closely than the writers, and not even a particularly egregious one. Set dressers put a guitar in Jim's room for an episode two years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if no one in the writers' room even noticed.

Anyway, this episode was not as funny as some, but maybe it's because I was so deeply embarassed by Michael in the cold open that it took a while to wear off. I think it's pretty clear that they're showing us a little bit of the Jim & Pam story arc; I don't think there's much chance that this is going to break them up (that would be so incredibly lame that I don't have words for it), but in a relationship that took so long to get going, it's obvious that there are going to be some insecurities. I didn't like watching Jim turn off Pam's logo to show her Second Life -- pretty presumtuous on his part -- and it was a little weird when he got jealous at the end, but both make sense. Pam's never been passionate about anything before, so he doesn't know what it looks like. It also took her a million years to come around to the idea of him as a romantic prospect, and he probably worries that he likes her more than she likes him.

she taped "Are You Smarter Than A Canadian Fifth Grader"

I almost did the same thing. What was Global TV thinking putting that on in The Office's timeslot?

Pam may not have known about the guitar, but it was cute when she noticed his avatar's build.

Oct 25th 2007

I don't know but I'm not as concerned as some of you are about Jim and Pam. I rewatched the episode after reading some of the posts and I don't see it. I mean, I see the parts you guys are talking about but I don't see it as a sign that they won't make it. Maybe my mind is just not letting me see it like that because I want them to be happy.

Oct 25th 2007

I don't see it as a sign that they won't make it.

I don't, either. It's just a story point.

Oct 25th 2007

It seems to me that it could just be the subtle beginnings of some future conflict. No biggie right now, but if it keeps up we might have something to worry about.

Oct 25th 2007

I completely agree!! I had the same reaction. All the singing made me happy, though. I have always loved Dwight, but found him annoying as well...now I just love him. So sweet. All the Jim/Pam scenes seemed off to me for some reason. But Andy. He stole the show. Andy and Darryl. I really hope we find out what Michael puts on the mix for Darryl. I bet anything Vanilla Ice is on it!

Oct 25th 2007

The mental image of Andy & Angela rubbing necks freaked me out. But I found myself getting really jealous on Dwight's behalf when Andy was talking about that stuff.

Oct 25th 2007

he probably worries that he likes her more than she likes him.

I have no doubt this is in the back of Jim's mind. And there's probably a small part of him that still worries about Roy. Is Jim Pam's rebound? Does she still have feelings for Roy because they were together for so long? I think the answer to both these questions is a definitive "No", but I also wouldn't blame Jim for having some insecurity.

I also see it as the subtle beginning of future conflict. I think the use of "dreams" in Jim's parking lot speech was a deliberate choice by the writers, as Jim has said at least once (Casino Night) that he doesn't have dreams. But I think it will be good conflict, because it will allow them to learn about each other and grow closer.

Oct 25th 2007

Me too DftF. I was imagining them doing that and it gave me chills. I felt bad for Dwight. Can you imagine having to listen to your ex's new boyfriend telling you about their sexcapades?

Oct 25th 2007

as Jim has said at least once (Casino Night) that he doesn't have dreams.

So after today, do you think it's Jim's dream to be a sports writer?

Oct 25th 2007

So after today, do you think it's Jim's dream to be a sports writer?

Yes. I think what we got out of that is that Jim aspires to be a sports writer and he likes playing the guitar, but I thought that he really didn't want Pam to know those things. He seemed a little embarrassed that she discovered that about him. If that's the case, then he probably doesn't bring out his guitar when she's around because he's afraid she'll ask him to play. Another thought might be that he is planning to surprise her with a song that he wrote for her b'day which he will for her while he plays the guitar.

His little talk in the parking lot might be Jim reflecting on what Pam's dream will mean for their relationship. One hand he wants her to pursue her dreams. On the other hand, will her dreams take her away from Dunder Mifflin and the happiness they have from being together on a daily basis? Maybe if something like that actually happens, it will prompt a proposal from Jim.

I'm getting way too far ahead of himself. Never mind:)

Oct 25th 2007

I agree he seemed embarassed when Pam started noticing the details of his "second life". We know he has a guitar, but do we know if he can play it? I thought part of his embarassment might have been that those were things he'd like to be doing, but isn't currently. Maybe seeing Pam actively pursuing her dreams, will help Jim take a step in that direction. Unlike last year though, hopefully this year it will be about what he truly wants. Maybe he'll learn to play, and write her a song like you've suggested.

Oct 25th 2007

I didn't see or hear any spoilers and I enjoyed this episode so much. We had a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. When the video was played at the end, it was so nicely done, I just felt compelled to clap at the end of it and I did. It had heart. The Office is starting to get that feel of it being the family that Michael Scott always said it was.

I loved watching Creed play his pseudo guitar during the singing session.

Poor Dwight. The torture is magnified now that he has become friendly with Andy.

Phyllis seemed to be genuinely crying.

Where was Toby?
