Discuss all things Toby.

My favorite 'support' character.

Awesome knack for avoiding pointless office BS - great shot of him closing the office door after all other 'boys' have left for the warehouse (Boys and Girls episode).

Paul does a great job for a writer who never expected to be acting.

I keep waiting for the episode where Toby finally has had enough. The dude is soooo mellow. Or possibly, depressed. That's much more likely, actually. The writers on this show are incredible multi-taskers.

Feb 20th 2006

I liked when Toby stayed back when the "boys" went to the warehouse, which I like to call, the whorehouse.

Also I like how frustrated and mad Micheal gets when he talks about Toby. I wonder if there is more to his hatred of Toby other than the fact that he works for HR and isn't really a part of the Scranton branch family, then again he really isn't a part of his family either.

Feb 20th 2006

Todd, I think Michael hates Toby so much because Toby often tries to stand in the way of him having fun and being a cool boss -- taking away his corporate credit card, not letting them serve booze at the Christmas party, etc. Michael can't comprehend the lines between informal and office conduct, and so he just perceives it as a personal vendetta against him.

Feb 20th 2006

Oh Toby's nonchalant face! "Technically I am in human resources, and Dwight was asking a question on human anatomy...umm...I'm just sad that the public school system failed him so badly..."

Per Michael, Toby recently went through a divorce. Does Michael think Toby is gay?

From Boys and Girls episode:

"Michael Scott: Everyone, guys. Circle up, please. Come on over. Bring your chairs. Toby, come on over. You're a guy... too. Sort of.

Feb 20th 2006

Poor Toby, he get's ragged on so much. I wonder if he's just going to snap one day?

I think it was meant more in a "one of the guys" way. You know, by being part of HR Toby isn't one of the guys.

I loved Toby's "To Amsterdam" bit in this past episode. The circumstances and that weary, pained sarcastic response really sum up his character--how he is a man beaten down by his boss and his life.

Mar 8th 2006

My favorite Toby moment is when he races up to the boat as it is pulling away. Michael decides to "punish him" by not letting him on the cruise.

For a brief moment I felt real bad for Toby...

...then we find out he was late on purpose cause he didn't want to go and Michael fell for it (earlier Michael had said that the cruise was mandatory for all to attend).

Ha! That's the one time that Toby got one over on Michael.

i thought this was in the hot girl episode. in that one when michael was introducing her around. she and toby started to hit it off, or at least discuss something they had in common. so michael brings up toby's divorce (adding that it was kind of messy), in order to nip that in the bud.

toby does get grief when he steps on michael's cool boss activities. but most other times bashing toby is just michael's way of publicly bashing corporate, which is of course more cool boss activity.

2-12 The Injury - Michael falls down in the bathroom and Toby is talking to him from outside.

Toby: what do you need?
Michael: yuck, not you. Someone else, get Pam.
-
Michael: get Ryan!
Ryan: (shaking head no)
Toby: Ryan is, uh...
Ryan: (makes throat cutting motion to signify no)
Toby: ...dead (shakes head/realizes it wasn't a plausible excuse) dead...

Summer vacation coinciding with the end of the office season added to discovering this website has made my addiction to this show grow to unhealthy levels. I'm watching every episode again and noticing plenty of things I've never seen before.

For instance, in Sexual Harassment we catch a glimpse of an award above Toby's desk (while Dwight asks for a lesson on female anatomy). It's presented to one Elliot T. Jindraike. It would appear that Toby goes by his middle name. Elliot Tobias Jindraike. That does sound like someone who would "harsh the office mellow".

My favorite Toby scene has got to be the most recent, where he rattles off a list of all the reasons why the boy scouts won't be at their Casino Night. I just love his sarcastic delivery. That mini speech really needs to be on a tee shirt.

Google reveals that "Elliot T. Jindraike" is the name of the principal in the 2001 film Max Keeble's Big Move. Jindraike is played by Larry Miller, who has no connection to the Office that I can tell.

May 17th 2006

I love Larry Miller. He's amazing in Best in Show.

May 17th 2006

oh wow, we learn alot about Toby.

Sep 28th 2006

We have a last name: Toby Flenderson.

Sep 29th 2006 edited

Beat me to it, Nathan, I was just going to post that. I'm not totally on board with the Toby crushing on Pam angle because I think there's enough office romance going on already, but the actor did a great job with it. It will be interesting to see where the creators go with that story line.

Sep 29th 2006

I love how Toby totally has that sad-sack hangdog look. Btw, Sad-sack Hangdog is the name of my next band.

Sep 29th 2006

Toby Flenderson sounds like an SNL character. I laughed hard at that and had to back it up to make sure I heard correctly.

I agree that Toby and Pam should not hook up. No one else should hook up--it's getting close to crossing the line. Couples are not necessary to keep The Office funny. The characters do that. And I doubt I am alone when I say that, in theory, it would be great for Jam to be married with a baby on the way. But in reality, when that tension ends, it's gone. Gone, gone, gone. I like the tension. To quote the great Tori Amos *It's just an empty cage, girl, if you kill the bird."

Just realized I strayed from talking about Toby, so I'll add that he has great comedic timing and is a great writer. I loved the Halloween ep when Michael said he wished he could fire Toby and he just said "I know, Michael" with that great, sympathetic expression.

Sep 29th 2006

Flenderson sounds made up.

Toby knows better than to date an office worker. Out of character.

I want him to be "Elliot Tobias Jindraike". If that isnt his name, why is the award even there?

Sep 29th 2006

Flenderson sounds made up.

No kidding. I wonder if Michael was messing with his name on purpose (Toby Henderson seems like a more likely name). Hmm. Time to go Veronica Mars on this mystery.

Sep 29th 2006 edited

Keep us posted, James. I kinda hope that's not his name. That'd be funny if they were playing with all of us fanatics before finally giving us his real name.

TWSS, this should be true for the HR rep, but Toby does seem somewhat desperate, and therefore willing to overlook something that is probably inappropriate.

garbagethrower, Are you thinking of Tommy Flanagan the pathological liar from SNL?

Oct 26th 2006

My theory is that Toby is actually a secret pot head. I don't know how he'd pass the corporate drug testing, but his week or month in Amsterdam and readiness to correct Michael about the use of a hookah ... I don't know for sure, but it sure would explain the mellowness.
