One thing about deer: they have very good vision. One thing about me: I am better at hiding than they are at vision.
In my opinion, the best scene in this episode is a deleted on. There is more to the scene where Jim and Dwight are out by the car. Jim goes to leave, and tells dwight to stay there for 15 minutes and to pretend to smoke. IT IS HILARIOUS>
Is it just me, or is anyone else obsessed with the fact that Jim has a car alarm?
It's a.weird for Scranton b.out of character for Jim c. killing me to not know the backstory of how they came up with the idea - and specifically whose car that really is...
But its the Ultimate Driving Machine...a red Corolla. ;-)
In all seriousness tho, I think the Corolla is one of the top 10 most frequently stolen cars in the U.S.
Holly Ivy-Baker, in regards to whose car it really is, John says in the DVD commentary that it is Phyllis's car.
I have a Corolla, and it's only been vandalized twice. :) Mine came with an alarm.
Thanks much, PWJ - 1/3 of the jones-to-know is satisfied...
Blppt - had a Civic myself which went on, after 2 front end accidents, to serve the greater good as a charitable donation after my prayers that it be stolen weren't answered - my remaining vestiges of Honda pride push me to note it was #1 on the motor vehicle theft list in its day. My current car has an antitheft system which so far has only kept me from getting into it and driving away unnoticed (and I have keys).
Favorite Jim quote of the show:
At that moment I was just, so happy. I mean everything that Dwight does annoys me... and I spend hours thinking of ways to get back at him. But only in ways that would get me arrested- and then here he comes and says he says, 'No, Jim - here's a way.'
Did anyone else hear Michael say, towards the end of Meredith's party, say "Oscar's nephew's Walk-a-Thong?"
The Alliance is just a priceless episode...I never get tired of watching it. And Dwight is my hero:
"Dwight: Did you get your tickets yet?
Jim: To what?
Dwight: To the gun show."
Hi "Office Mates" I'm new on these boards. I love this site. Anyway, The Alliance is one of my all time favorites for four reasons:
1: When Michael is doing the Star Trek routine with his cell phone as the scanner
2: The expression on Michael's face when he realizes he agreed to donate $25 PER MILE
3: When Michael, with a mouth full of cake, is telling Meredith how freaked she was when they all yelled surprise. And of course the famous line "If I were allergic to dairy, I'd kill myself"
4: Dwight sealed up in the box.

OMG! - I don't know if this has been mentioned in The Office season 1 DVD commentary, or anywhere else, so please forgive me if this is common knowledge.
I just noticed something in The Alliance that is weird and disturbing. When Jim is down in the warehouse, taping Dwight into the box, watch the action behind Jim on the floor. It appears to be a rodent trap or something with a "struggling" black rat beside it. In the next take, it is gone, but later appears while Pam is in the warehouse on the phone.
I am so freaked out by this. That is just gross. Please tell me that is not a real, dying rat that somehow ended up in this scene. I hope it's just the writers messing with us. Wow, I'm sickened.
I checked it out as well. If that's a rat, that's one huge rat! I too was freaked out by it. Great eye, Lori.
I'm sure the props pros doctored it up to make it even more realistic.
You have an amazing set of eyes.
Trent, Pizzero, and Count Chocula,
Thanks for your support. I suppose it is a fake rat like the Rat in a Trap. That makes me feel a lot better. I was really freaked out by the whole thing and am still a little disturbed. I wonder what gag the writer's will throw our way, next. This is great!
Hey, I think my high school French teacher had one of those...it co-starred in a class production of the early part of The Count of Monte Cristo, fighting with Edmond for the scraps of food thrown into his prison cell...creepy little things.
love this site!!
alliance is still my favorite. the obvious scene is the birth scene when dwight comes out of the box. he never stops moving!
the best is the pause after he cuts open a tiny opening with his pocket knife. you can hear dwight flip the pocket knife closed, then come busting out. it is unbelievably funny. i still laugh like i did when i first watched that scene last year!
edtrash,
I loved Dwight in the Box, too. It always reminds me of Jim Carrey coming out of the fake rhino, in one of his Ace Ventura movies. I love that.
Hey--just a comment about a Holly Ivy-Baker post.... ...Is it just me, or is anyone else obsessed with the fact that Jim has a car alarm?

It is not really weird for Scranton--you need a car alarm in Scranton...as much as I love it, because I live fifteen minutes away, the mall is fabulous (especially the Jitterz..) etc etc, it's "kind of dark out there"...There are parts of Scranton that are dangerous, I'm afraid to walk the streets in broad daylight..alot of...strange, strange, scary looking people...so it's good that Jim has the alarm! hahaha
I think the thing that sticks out the most in that episode is when Jim tells Pam that Dwight is in a box in the warehouse. And she runs downstairs to pretend to be on her cellphone "talking" about rumors about the downsizing... and she's talking close enough to the box that Dwight is in so he can hear her. He starts shuffling back and forth in the box to try and get closer and he ends up tipping the box off to the side... I laughed hysterically when Pam could no longer contain her laughter. Her face and expressions are priceless. =)
Did anyone notice on the DVD that the brief synopsis of the episode says:
"As rumors of downsizing continues to circulate, Dwight suggests to John that they form a protective, strategic alliance."
John? I guess they got his character's name mixed with his real name
c. killing me to not know the backstory of how they came up with the idea - and specifically whose car that really is...
I think it's Phyllis's car, if I remember correctly from the DVD commentary. I think they said something about her very politely asking Rainn to be careful when he kicked it...
Nathan I believe you are right. I also remember them saying on the DVD commentary that it was Phyllis' car. I think they were even talking about that she wanted him to kick in a certain spot so that it didn't damage the car or something like that.

Yes, this is very old news, but I'd never actually seen the rat before now. Here's a screencap
I still don't think it's a real rat, but for some reason, I find it funny.

I don't either. It moves very mechanically. The only weird thing is that it's there, then it's gone, then it's back again. That makes me think that it was real and they got rid of it when they noticed it. It still doesn't seem real though.
I love your take on "absolutely I do" and all the little Jim and Pam moments. I'm going to have to watch this one again soon if I can find the time. Stupid final papers, I want some free time!
