I love how The Office is really trying to mix in the local flavor of Scranton, with numerous mentions of surrounding areas(Dickson City, Carbondale, etc), as well as actual locations: The Steamtown Mall, which is actually called "The Mall at Steamtown" - and its coffee shop, "Jitterz", as mentioned by Stanley's daugher.
One of the more notable references was in "Take Your Daughter To Work Day", when Micheal showed the clip of him on a local television show called "Fundle Bundle", as hosted by "Miss Trudy". In reality, there was a local television show called "Hatchy Malatchy", as hosted by "Miss Judy", with the same premise, including the puppets and local children.
Kudos to The Office and their research department for bringing my little corner of the world in Scranton, PA to primetime.
No, there isn't a Hooters in Scranton. I'm not sure where one is located in the surrounding area, although there were plans to bring one to Wilkes-Barre, which is about 10 miles from Scranton, which, ironically, has a Chilis restaurant, which Scranton does not.
Ziggadood, I am a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan, although there isn't much to cheer for this year. I've only been to one baby pens game. How big is the team there is WB/S? For those who aren't interested in hockey, The Pittsburgh Penguins minor league affiliate is the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins or what we Pittsburghers call, the baby Pens. There fanbase is one of the largest of all of the ECHL teams along with most non-pro hockey teams, and they tend to sell out most games there.
I really wish that the writers on the office would mention the Baby Pens once or twice on the show. I was just wondering, since you live in scranton, how interested people actually were there, and if it was enought to maybe show something about the team on the show.
I think they may have been talking about the team on "the client" when pam said she was left at a minor league hockey game by Roy. Later in the show Jim said "high school hockey game."
I'm from the suburbs of Philly and I've been to Scranton a few times. It's an old town in the Coal Mining region. As a kid, I did both fishing and boating on lake Wallumpulpack, but never a booze cruise.
I recently caught a great geographic reference in a show. Thankfully not only did I have the episode on DVR, but it was also in high-definition so I was able to clearly see and freeze the details.
To the right of Pam's desk (if you were facing her) on the wall, there is a poster for a Dunder Mifflin event. It gives the street address of the Dunder Mifflin offices in Scranton.
According to this poster, their office is located on SLOUGH AVENUE... A great reference to the BBC original.
I love the fact that I can watch this show two or three times, and with each successive viewing I see something funny that I missed the first time through!
Sorry I got the leagues mixed up... ECHL is the wheeling nailers, the other pens minor team.
I wonder if Gerry McNamara watches The Office. Both are giving the town a lot of notoriety!
Is the exterior shot of the office building actually in Scranton? I live in Canada but have a friend who moved to PA who also loves The Office. He lives about 20 minutes away from Scranton and I told him the next time I come to visit we're going to take pictures in front of all the landmarks that are in the opening.
Hmmm. Giving that a second read through, it sounds a little pathetic... :)
Marc Don't worry it's not that pathetic. I'd probably be doing the same thing.
I've also wondered about the exterior office shots. Has anyone read or heard what office building that is? Is it in Scranton, or somewhere else?
I can't remember exactly, but I think in some of the commentary from season 1, they mention something about John and his buddy actually going to Scranton and filming stuff for the opening credits...I could be wrong. But it went something like that.
Yeah, that's where the credits footage comes from.
As far as the Dunder Mifflin/Vance Refrigeration/whatever else building, I believe it's in Hollywood. The set is the offices above the soundstage; the warehouse is the soundstage; presumably, that's the building they use for exterior shots as well.
Nathan- that would make sense. I knew that the set was in an old warehouse, but for some reason when I think of "warehouse", I think of one floor buildings, and this one is more than that- right?
Todd Packer,
You want your Baby Pens reference, you got it.

I have nothing to add to this thread, but I wanted to bump it to the top because it was the very last post, way down on page 16, and I felt bad for it. Show it some love. Maybe we should make it the unofficial boobs/poop/sex/dirty stuff thread.

Man, what would that say about Scranton??
How about TDS's report last night on McCain's visit to "Wilkes-Barre PA, the doorway to Scranton"? JS waited a beat for laughter and everybody cheered!

That a lot of Internet traffic probably runs through there.

So, are you now feeling bad for the "Supersize my Office" thread that is now the very last post down on page 16?

Interesting, ziggadood. So where'd ya get that name, anyway?

Yes, but I've learned the hard way that I can't rescue every down-on-its-luck post out there and offer the warm comfort of a shaded "read" area to its title. It's a sad fact that I've learned to live with. I'll go to bed a little sadder.

I really like when you do that. I just thought you should know, once.
ziggadood appparently started 2 discussions, but only made 1 comment. Strange.
As I was recently in Scranton, I'll give a shout-out to Poor Richards, the downtown "Electric City" lights, the sign for the Mall at Steamtown (didn't go in), and the Scranton Visitors Center.
By the way, the Visitors Center lies; they say they have a gift shop, but they do not. They will direct you to the coal mine tour, though. I didn't do it.

Good. They don't even have laser tag down there. Lame.
