Edited: Thanks, Beckyloo for the correct term!

Sorry-I don't know the official term for the brief part of the episode that comes at the beginning of the show before the cute little Office Song (feel free to enlighten me if an official term exists).

Anyway, I LOVE these parts of the show-they get me so psyched for the rest of the episode! I can barely pick a favorite, but if I HAD to, I think it would be a tie between the one where Jim takes a pair of scissors to Dwight's "Fitness Orb" and the one where Jim hides all of Dwight's desk supplies in the vending machine. Can you tell I am a fan of Jim torturing Dwight?

Just wondering what your favorite is...

Mar 21st 2006

Good, good question. The intro for "Dwight's Speech" was pretty classic, but I'm going to have to go with "The Fight," when they moved Dwight's desk into the men's room.

Mar 21st 2006

Without a doubt - the 'updog' gag from The Secret episode.

Michael's epiphany when he gets the joke: "that's brilliant!"

Mar 21st 2006

PWJ...Oh man. How could I have forgotten about that one? I now have a three way tie. Jim moving Dwight's desk to the men's room is a classic. I love how he then calls Dwight on the phone and asks a business-as-usual question.

Priceless.

Mar 21st 2006

"Jim's been looking at me kind of a lot lately. I would be freaked out by it, but it's nothing compared to the way Michael...looks at me." Hands down! Favorite ever.

And of course, any time Jim punks Dwight.

So far, I love every opening that's been mentioned. As I wracked my brain to come up with memorable openings, one other came to mind, and this may be my favorite:

Ryan brings in michael's Jeans from the dry cleaners and then Pam mentions that Michael invented Casual Friday solely because he loves the way he looks in jeans. Then they flash to a quick shot of Michael in Jeans, on top of paper boxes acting as if he is riding a horse.

That 3 second clip of Michael is hysterical.

If I had to pick a second, it would be Dwight on the fitness orb.

Mar 21st 2006

Not great, but another one. The beginning of Office Olympics has Ryan bringing Michael the sausage mcmuffin. "risky business, home alone, run around with your pants off"

Mar 21st 2006

The beginning of "The Injury" was pretty awesome. Michael telling Ryan to get toilet paper, admitting the story about his girlfriend "was all made up," the talking head about bacon, then Dwight crashing, throwing up, speeding away, "You forgot your bumper!" and Michael's line, "Please don't send Dwight," as the perfect capper. What a great four minutes of television.

I'm gonna stay with Fitness Orb as my fav, but noooo gould brougt up my second pick - Ryan having to come in early.

Ryan: what was that thing you needed me in early for?
Michael: (hold up Micky D's bag.)
Ryan has that look of utter disbleief and disgust on his face when he realizes he came in early just to be a breakfast errand boy.

Hey, Ilovebeets, the beginning thingy is called a "teaser" or a "cold open" depending on which show you work.

As far as a favorite is concerned... I can't remember if my favorite talking head EVER was in the teaser but if so - my vote's for Booze Cruise, when Jim and Pam talk about Michael's memo: Pam: A ski-mask and a swimsuit… Jim: So that he can have us rob a bank and then escape to the sewers. Pam: …and brush our teeth…

Though the more I think about it, I don't think Booze Cruise had a teaser... So my vote would be for the fitness orb. I fell off my couch with laughter the first time I saw that one. The way Jim gingerly flips the scissors in his hand... PRICELESS!

Mar 22nd 2006

My favorite teaser is the "Updog" routine. Followed by the teaser from "The Injury" and then the teaser from "E-mail Surveillance"

Mar 22nd 2006

I wonder how many of those fitness orbs they went through or if that was the only take.......

Mar 22nd 2006

Beckylooo--In the teaser for "Booze Cruise," Dwight discovered that various personal belongings of his had been placed in the vending machine.

Mar 22nd 2006

HOLY HELL!!!!!!

How could I forget that!!!???? Thanks Nathan - that's my second favorite.

Mar 22nd 2006

I love the fitness orb opening, too. I love how Jim asks how much the orb costs. He's too nice of a guy to pop it without paying Dwight back, and you can see him mentally calculating the cost of the orb vs. the annoyance of Dwight bouncing on it.

Mar 22nd 2006

Definitely "The Fight", especially with the punchline ("wash your hands, Kevin!")

Close second: "Dwight's Speech", the end of that had me in hysterics.

Mar 22nd 2006

Thanks Nathan, I forgot about the vending machine.

Jim set it up so Pam would come in and buy something and not to be out done, Jim lets Dwigh off the hook with a zip-lock baggie full of NICKELS. Five, ten, fifteen, twenty...

Ha !

Mar 23rd 2006

Oh so many to love! Desk in the mens' room (that's when I knew that I loved this show), death of the fitness orb, and vending machine are all my favorites.

Mar 23rd 2006

Dwight: WHERE'S MY WALLET!! JIM: J-1

Beautiful, beautiful comedy.

Mar 23rd 2006

You know what's so great about Dwight counting the nickels is that the machine TELLS you digitally, but he's still counting, "5, 10, 15..." HA.

Mar 23rd 2006

I know this isn't a typical "funny" one, but I think it's the "Fire" episode where Pam answers the phone and it's Katy calling for Jim. It looks like she was kind of bothered by it. And since I am a huge fan of JAM, that was kind of cool to see, especially coming from her!

Mar 23rd 2006

After having repeated viewings of each one, I would have to say that I find the beginning of Dwight's Speech the funniest. The popping orb was more funny upon first viewing, and comes in a close second, but Dwight wreaking havoc on his coworkers floors me every single time I watch it.

Mar 23rd 2006

I like the one from Halloween, when Michael is talking to Jan's secretary about who he's going to fire... When he mutters "Should fire Sharri" (excuse the spelling...) and she's still on the line. Just another one of those awkward moments that makes me cringe.

Mar 25th 2006

It may not be the best teaser, but I have to give a shout-out to "The Fire," if for no other reason than this seemed to be the first real taste of Pam-angst we received.

Katy and Jim met in the office, and now I guess they're, like, going out, or, dating, or something. And, uh, I don't know, you know, they're just... she calls him and they, you know... I'm sorry, I feel like I'm talking really loud. Am I talking really loud?

Mar 26th 2006

I've created a poll for this over at OfficeTally, with proper credit, of course. :)

May 18th 2006

So over the past several days I've watched the 14 episodes (Christmas special included) of the British The Office for the first time (when I rented the first series a couple months back the DVD skipped a ton, so I missed quite a bit). I'll post generic comments later in the appropriate thread, but as far as teasers/cold opens are concerned, the British version only had two -- the first part of the Christmas special and the series two premier.

The random simpleness of "Mahna Mahna" has to be on top for me, even if this topic was meant for the US version exclusively.

May 18th 2006

I think Jim's telekinesis might have taken the lead here.

May 31st 2006 edited

Without a doubt the Fitness Orb. I love how Phyllis reacts to the stabbing :)

Running a close second is Jim's telekinetic powers. Pam's silence speaks volumes there. How cute is she with the umbrella? dies haha

Jan 7th 2007

Bumping this thread for the recent discussion in the Top 5 thread...

And I'll add that I think my favorite is when Jim hides Dwight's desk.

Where is my desk?
Hmm, that's weird.
This is not funny. This is totally unprofessional.
Well, you're the one who lost the desk.
I didn't lose my desk.
Ok, calm down. Where was the last place you saw it?
Ok, who moved my desk?
I think you should retrace your steps.

I'm even giggling as I type. Love Jim's delivery. And I love that Dwight proceeds to take Jim's call in the mensroom as if nothing happened.

Jan 7th 2007

ddker you asked about how many fitness orbs they may have went through? I was listening to the DVD commentary and apparently the original idea was that John would punch it with the scissors, but that the ball would deflate very very slowly and Rainn would just sink to the ground, and they got a lot of takes of that. The actual take they use they actually refer to as a "blooper" because John managed to hit the seam of the "orb" and pop it. I just thought that that was a really funny little story.
