I've been waiting for a topic like this. Let's see...

  1. Booze Cruise
  2. The Dundies
  3. Email Surveillance
  4. Diversity Day
  5. The Injury

Honorable Mention: Health Care, The Fire, and almost all of the other 17 episodes aired to date. The Pilot, Basketball, Hot Girl, The Carpet, and possibly Valentine's Day are the only ones I could never see cracking my top five.

EDIT: Blake, The Fire is quickly rising on my list, making our lists dangerously close to being identical.

My top 5, with reasons (since the OP did want some discussion, after all). I could easily have done a top 10 though.

Number Five: Boys & Girls. I know some people think Pam's tears toward the end were a bit too expected, but I dunno, it really hit home for me. This might be my favorite scene the Office has ever done.

Number Four: Performance Review. Not much JP activity here, but the stuff about tricking Dwight into thinking it's Friday is genius. I can't watch the suggestion-box scene without expelling whatever I'm drinking through my nose. That last conversation between Michael and Jan at the elevators is perfectly emotionally pitched.

Number Three: Halloween. Dwight as Sith Lord? Jim as Michael? Unceremoniously hanging up on Toby? Please. This episode would have been great even without that last scene of Michael with the kids, or Pam's line about "if you left here, I would blow my brains out." Also, it's Creed's first speaking part, although he's been hovering around in the background since the pilot.

Number Two: The Fight. The writing is so tight in this one, it's like a precision machine. Reminds me of Seinfeld, almost, except none of the characters on that show were ever particularly sympathetic. "The Fight" is like the writers of Seinfeld at the top of their game, writing for characters that you actually care about.

Number One: Christmas Party. Just superb the way everything locks into place. Great, great use of the ensemble cast, there's not a five-second span without some hilarious line, and it's about as high as the JPI has gotten so far. I'm sentimental and I like that stuff. After watching this episode, I sat back and said "Wow, the Office is the best thing on televison."

Wow, this is like picking from amongst your children (although I don’t have kids, so I’m just guessing)

First off let me apologize if I’m incredibly long winded (I tend to get carried away, which is why I don’t post a lot—I love to read other people’s comments, but I just figure no one wants to listen to me babble).

Here are my favorite episodes (though I am in no way certain about these; there are just to many good episodes to chose from)

The Injury—-I loved so much about this episode; Jim and his spray bottle, Pam getting paranoid that Dwight was her friend, Ryan getting freaked about helping Michael in the bathroom, and him then crushing up the aspirin, the fact that Meredith had liquor bottles in her van, the doctor laughing at Dwight’s “That’s what she said,” Michael’s rules of shotgun, Dwight’s line: “You can’t fire me. I don’t work in this van!” and Jim’s “Dwight, you forgot your bumper.” I could go on and on, but don’t worry, I won’t.

The Dundies—-Pam drunk was priceless. And I love the fact that she is banned from Chili’s (how great was that manager). I loved the different awards people got, Angela refusing to receive her “Tight Ass” award, Ryan all nervous about “Hottest in the Office” Kevin and the “Don’t go in there after me” and Phyllis’s “Bushiest Beaver”--come on people, this is good stuff. I love, love, love the Jim and Pam cuteness, particularly the kiss. Jan listing all the office parties was pretty funny too (I would totally go to a 05-05-05 party). And then there was the best line of the episode: “Sir, please put your clothes back on. People are trying to eat.”

Boys and Girls—-I have to admit that this episode has a special place in my heart because it was the first one I ever saw (I know, I stared watching really late—but better late then never, right). I thought it was the funniest thing I had seen on TV in a long time, and even after seeing every other episode a zillion times, I still love B&G. The warehouse guys are just the best: the expression on Daryl’s face throughout the entire episode, how they all get openly pissed at Michael for making a mess, the whole union issue and how everything is eventually “solved” by eating pizza and blaming Jan. The "Good Will Hunting" thing, or the "0 days without an accident" were both great little touches. Our guys were great too, the "run out the clock situation", Jim and Ryan messing with Dwight (it’s normal for Jim, but Ryan joining in made it extra special), how Jim really did get nervous around Roy (and Michael’s line about some of them liking the same girls, was that classic or what), Dwight’s line about “The Others” (I’m a huge Lost fan). And let’s not forget the ladies, especially Kelly’s question about going to second base. I also thought that this was one of the best Jim and Pam episodes. It really showed that not only did Jim really want to be with Pam (the emotion behind his “I like taking to her, too” gives me chills) but he also truly wants what’s best for her. He wants her to be happy. Roy doesn’t even want to take her to dinner, let alone allow her to follow her dreams. And poor Pam is just too damn scared to take any kind of risk. I think this episode really shows the true dynamic of that love triangle.

Wow, this is already too long, and I still have two to go (hey, I warned you)

Drug Testing—-I think Jim put it best: Dwight was carrying his own urine in a cup, and he was dressed like one of the Village People. Priceless. The interrogations were brilliant, especially Jim's. Also great: Dwight explaining “the hard way” to Ryan and his simple “Yeah, let’s do it that way” in return. And Ryan asking for a job testing urine. But the best part of the episode was the fact that Jim couldn’t talk. He does the best faces I’ve ever scene (the one at the soda machine when he realizes he’s screwed is great). He can speak volumes without saying one word, and we really saw that here (I am convinced that no other actor and no other show could have ever pulled this off). The fake crying scene was superb. And his expression after Pam said that he could tell her anything--all I can say is: Wow. I mean, it literally broke my heart. And then there was that totally swoonworthy “Hi” at the end. Again: Wow.

Okay, now for my all time favorite episode: It’s "The Alliance." It always has been and probably always will be. There are just so many things about this episode that I love. Too many really, but don’t worry, I won’t list them all. I will name two though: Jim taping Dwight into a box, and Dwight emerging from the box. There are just no words...

Finally, once again, I am sorry for the epic entry (I can’t shut-up sometimes).

JMW 54, what's the significance of your handle?

Also, you say you started late. but you've caught up and watched them all, right?

Right?!

May 10th 2006

That'sWhatSheSaid,

I picked a really boring name. I signed up a while ago, before I realized everyone else had Office related names. I was actually thinking about changing it, but I'm kinda burnt out from my finals and don't have the energy to be creative right now. JMW are my initials (my first name is Jenna, just like Pam’s real life alter ego) and 5-4 is my birthday (as in May 4, not as in 1954).

And to answer your question, yes, I have seen every single episode. I watched the first season on DVD and the rest on iTunes. In fact, my university almost cut off my internet service cause I downloaded all the episodes at once and had virtually used up my bandwidth limit for the entire week. But it totally would have been worth it.

I probably have to edit my list now to put "Conflict Resolution" in there.

The staff at iTunes has posted their top 8 favorites. Their first choice? Diversity Day, of course.

Can a nigga get a link?

Not offensive, because that's how they talk in movies.

My top 5 are:

Casino Night The Dundies The Injury Email Surveillance Office Olympics

All of them (except for maybe The Injury) have great Jamness. The Injury is just incredibly funny, especially Dwight looking at Creed and saying "Dad?" And I still laugh every time I see the doves at the closing ceremony in Office Olympics, even though I have watched it about 10 times. And Jim's "Candle..andle..andle that I found in the men bathroom..room...room." It amazes me that the writing can be so good on all the shows.

My favorites, in order:

  1. Take Your Daughter to Work Day - Like I said in my introduction, I loved Michael’s interaction with Toby’s daughter (Sasha?). It made the episode for me.

  2. Booze Cruise - This episode contains my all time favorite scene, which is at the end of the episode when Jim tells Michael his feelings for Pam. It was very understated and I love Michael telling Jim to never give up.

  3. Dwight’s Speech - This episode was hilarious, I always crack up when Dwight gives that dictator-like speech to everybody. I love how everyone was motivated by it.

  4. The Dundies - Pam gets drunk and falls on the floor. How could this not be a favorite episode? Also, the Jim/Pam kiss. For some unknowable reason, I like that kiss better than the real kiss in Casino Night.

  5. Office Olympics - I love Angela’s Jim/Pam interaction game, and Ryan throwing away his medal while Jim hangs his on his desk lamp. Most of all, I like the end. Michael’s little smile always makes me smile.
